Also....please note: we'll be taking pictures! Props & a painted frame and will take pics of moms holding up the frame and posing in front of a beach background. The pics will be printed and placed in the nets! AND on FB.

Sat Nov 17th: Christmas Parade

Starts at 11am, line up on Kent at 10-10:30. Graven is providing a truck for us, driven by Rae, and the moms and kids can sit in the back to wave. Open to all members. If you want to walk and hand out fliers beside the truck, GREAT! We will purchase some candy to give out.

Tuesday, November 20th will be a super-fun Photo Scavenger Hunt!

PLEASE NOTE: we are starting AT 6pm! We will break into small groups and will be leaving at 6:30 with a list of things to take pictures of, taken by a camera phone. There cannot be 1 photographer, all most rotate and be in the photos. There are points awarded by the difficulty of photo (you will see on the list). Be back by 7:30 and your photos will be counted up. The winning 4 will get a prize. And it will be worth it!

Food Rotation: Starfish Sweeties & Coral Reef Cuties (Theme: Comfort food – think Thanksgiving!)

Camera Shy

How many of you read or heard about the huge article last week "The Mom Stays In the Picture"?

Published in the Huffington Post on October 6th, it was written by Allison Tate. Allison Tate is a regular mom..thirtysomething, mom to four, freelance writer, school volunteer, car-pool driver. Usually late to arrive. Still carrying extra baby weight. Sometimes awkward, tired, and rumpled.

Her post is honest, vulnerable. Profoundly moving.

And steps on toes. Mom toes.

Last week, she shared a story that began with an object of dread: a photo booth at a party. Her 5-year-old son wanted her to join him in it. She hesitated, really wanting to avoid it.

"It seems logical. We're sporting mama bodies and we're not as young as we used to be. We don't always have time to blow dry our hair, apply make-up, perhaps even bathe (ducking). The kids are so much cuter than we are; better to just take their pictures, we think.
But we really need to make an effort to get in the picture. Our sons need to see how young and beautiful and human their mamas were. Our daughters need to see us vulnerable and open and just being ourselves -- women, mamas, people living lives. Avoiding the camera because we don't like to see our own pictures? How can that be okay?......."

"I'm everywhere in their young lives, and yet I have very few pictures of me with them. Someday I won't be here -- and I don't know if that someday is tomorrow or thirty or forty or fifty years from now -- but I want them to have pictures of me. I want them to see the way I looked at them, see how much I loved them. I am not perfect to look at and I am not perfect to love, but I am perfectly their mother."

"The kids are so much cuter than we are...."

That’s certainly what I think.

I mean, why would I want documentation — evidence — of all my faults?

Behind the camera is where I feel safest.

Lately, though, I’ve been reconsidering this policy.
Not because of Tate; because of one of my daughter's.
She has recently become very camera-shy, too.

I wonder: Is this my influence?

Conversely, Tate’s influence has been positive: As of today, her essay has 521,332 “likes” on Facebook; it has been shared 151,400 times; it has prompted 805 comments.

As the picture-perfect post went viral, the Huff Post created a gallery of submitted images where readers — moms like me — have stayed in the picture. Their comments, about themselves and their children, are so powerful:

“No makeup, an extra 100 pounds, and grey hair. Look how much my kids love me anyway.”

“After reading this article, I realize, I must be in the pictures, she must see me, for who I am today. She loves me just as I am, so why shouldn’t I do the same?”

"I've decided the measure of a pic with my kids is not if I look "good", but if I look happy. Then it's a keeper! Flat hair, double chin, crazy eyebrows, whatever, if you can tell how much I loved my kids in that exact moment, well it's perfect."

I encourage you to read Allison's entire article.

Boring School Lunches?

Check out this great collection of recipes over at Second Chance to Dream!

This is one that I can't wait to try.....

Mini Deep Dish BBQ Chicken Pizza
  • olive oil
  • 10 oz. refrigerated pizza crust dough
  • 1/2 cup bbq sauce, more as needed (I used hickory & brown sugar)
  • grilled chicken, tossed in bbq sauce
  • red onion
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, more as needed
  • fresh cilantro
 Directions
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Brush 9 wells, of a standard size muffin/cupcake pan with olive oil.

Roll out pizza crust dough to desired thickness, dough will expand during baking (I stretched my dough pretty thin). Use a large biscut cutter (or rim of a glass) to cut out 9 circles of dough, and press into bottom and up sides of muffin pan.
Spoon a scant tablespoon of sauce onto each dough cup, and spread up sides
Add chicken and finely chopped red onion or desired "toppings".
Top with shredded cheese. I like a lot of cheese on my pizza, so I really piled it on, but you can use as much as you like, depending on your preference.
Bake for 10 minutes, until edges start to turn golden brown
Top with chopped fresh cilantro and transfer to wire rack for 2-4 minutes before removing from pan. Serve immediately

8 Weeks of Thanksgiving

Joy, it’s always a function of gratitude — and gratitude is always a function of perspective.

If we are going to change our lives, what we’re going to have to change is the way we see.

                                                                                                                             ~Ann Voskamp

Finding joy. Digging down deep and discovering gratitiude. This sounds good to me. I want this. I find myself ashamed that most days, I don't really give it a thought. At least, intentionally.

But I want to.

And I love that I don't have to do it alone.

I recently was invited to a facebook group called "8 Weeks of Thanksgiving".  Whose goal is to practice the discipline of thankfulness and gratitude in the 8 weeks between Oct 1st and Thanksgiving Day.
By sending out two cards/or emails of sincere gratitude to someone that we know per week.

I also love this:

OctoberJoyDareCrop

So I challenge you....join in. Join with some of us other mops moms, and people around the country, and lets get our hearts mindful of thanksgiving. Let discover crazy Joy!
